The title page with the butterfly trying to escape the grab reads: “We want to live! … and the first step to life is FAITH.”

Step 1:

Question: “What do you mean by ‘Faith’?”

Answer: “Faith equals Life in the history of the Jewish people.”

a. The tract then gives the example of the story in Numbers 21:4-9: The camp of the Israelites in the desert was invaded by poisonous snakes as a result of the people’s sin. Any Israelite bitten by a snake had only one chance of survival: He could look to the bronze serpent Moses had lifted up on a staff, thereby displaying his faith in God, and he would be healed from the effect of the venom.

b. Faith versus Works: An Israelite bitten by a snake could try different means to save himself: Take medicine, find a doctor, suck at the wound or even amputate the bitten limb. Whatever he tried – the venom would inevitably kill him. The only way to survive was by obeying God’s command by faith.

Step 2:

The Rabbi and Faith

a. Under this heading, the tract tells the story of Nicodemus, to whom Jesus explained (John 3:14-15): “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

b. The “Salvation by faith versus salvation by works” principle from the story of the snake is now applied to the two roads man can take in his attempt to repair his separation from God, which was caused by sin:

  • Try to establish his own righteousness before God (an attempt the Bible proves to be impossible),
  • Put his faith in the One who was “lifted up” – Jesus the Messiah who died on our behalf to make atonement for sin, so that we could have life.

Step 3:

“The coming of this Savior has long been foretold in Scripture” (followed by references to six major Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament). “All of these predictions have been precisely fulfilled by Jesus the Messiah. – It is time to believe!”
